Fox glacier from Mt. Alice

I use clay as a medium to create both utilitarian and sculptural forms. Wood-firing my work accentuates their natrual forms and leaves a unique surface on each piece. To compliment the flames within the kiln, I work with a fluid and undulating style, which allows each piece an unrestricted freedom to react with the kiln environment and pick up subtile ash deposits and flame marks.

This loose style directly relates to my natural surroundings. Raised in Alaska, I lived in a coastal environment where nature was never still. In a place where mountains meet the sea, where glacier-fed rivers flow, where abundant wildlife always exists, it is a world that is always moving and undulating in a special harmony. Using this earthy clay medium, I strive to mimic the movement found in nature, in a place where the summits meet the depths. Working with clay takes me back to this nature, this undulating, Alaskan beauty.
